Gerard drove Olga and Gloria to Rome the next day. He took them to the hotel that Lucien always stayed in. The woman who owned it was named Amalia. When they had checked in, Amalia got excited and said, “Oh, are you the Gloria that Lucien talks about?”

“Yes,” she said.

Amalia told her that Lucien talked about her all the time and said that he wanted to marry her and that Marie had called her from Paris a few months ago to weep and say that Lucien was leaving her for an American actress. “Do you love Lucien for himself or because he’s a famous star?” she asked Gloria, crying at the same time over the plight of mad Lucien.

Gloria told her you couldn’t ask a question like that because it didn’t mean anything. If Lucien wasn’t a star, he wouldn’t be Lucien. Amalia wasn’t satisfied with the answer, but she dropped the subject.

“You must have Lucien’s room,” she told her, and led Olga and Gloria out of the lobby, which had been a pretty depressing place, small, with sickly green walls, threadbare chairs, a desk and a telephone, and a calendar on the wall.

The stairs to the room were on the court, open to the wind and cold. The bedroom had no heat at all. “You can have a gas heater if you want it,” said Amalia.

They said, of course, they wanted it. When it was lit, it blew blue fire into the air. There wasn’t any hot water or a bathroom. A sink in the room and a toilet in the freezing hall was all. The furniture, though, was very old and beautiful. Two shuttered windows opened onto a piazza below.

“I’m sleeping in Lucien’s room with you,” declared Olga to Gloria. “I’m not going to sleep alone in that awful room across the hall.”
